On Thursday 5 July 2018, local MP Priti Patel will launch her yearly literacy initiative – Get Witham Reading – in schools to celebrate and promote reading achievements by students and young people in the Witham constituency.

First launched in 2012, Get Witham Reading is commemorating its sixth anniversary by bringing together over a hundred schoolchildren, their parents and teachers to participate in reading activities.

Students, parents, Governors and teachers from schools across the constituency will take part in a range of activities designed to encourage leisurely reading and improve literacy levels. Each school will put on activities that are based on chosen books which will encourage a love of English and storytelling.

Priti said: “I am thrilled that once again that I will be launching Get Witham Reading 2018 and joining pupils from right across the Witham constituency. I believe that like in previous years this event will inspire children and parents, to enjoy reading and develop literacy skills. Recreational reading is a fantastic way to enhance a child’s imagination, whilst improving core academic skills.

“I would like to thank all the schools who will be taking part in this initiative as it can really develop a child’s reading and writing skills which will be used in later life.”
