Priti Patel MP has called on the Government to introduce more transparency and accountability in the decision-making process for waste incinerators. Speaking during a debate in Westminster on waste incineration today (9th April), Priti, who is campaigning against the proposed Rivenhall Incinerator, highlighted the complex paperwork involved when operators apply for licenses from the Environment Agency and the difficulties the public face in scrutinising and holding applicants to account (see below video).

Commenting after the debate, Priti said:  “The Rivenhall Incinerator has been casting a shadow over this part of Essex for more than a decade. The plans keep changing and, with new licence applications being submitted, it is a challenge for residents to keep up. Local campaigners are doing a great job holding the operator to account but we need to see more transparency and accountability in the decision-making process, so that residents can properly respond to consultation and are able to oppose licence applications.”
