Witham MP Priti Patel has called for new laws to be introduced to support victims of crime. During questions to the Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab, in the House of Commons (22nd November 2022), Priti welcomed the forthcoming Victims Bill and called for the legislation to include more rights for victims, including better access to compensation.

Priti, who first proposed a Victims Bill in 2011, said: “The criminal justice system needs to be rebalanced to give victims of crime more rights, support, access to compensation and to punish offenders who commit horrendous crimes. Too many of my constituents and people across the country have been let down by the failures of the courts and the CPS and it is time that changed.

“I have campaigned for over a decade for new laws for victims and I am pleased they are now coming forward. It is essential that these laws empower victims and I will continue to raise these matters with the Government.”
