Priti Patel, Witham’s MP, was in town on Thursday night (2nd June 2022) to light Witham Town Council’s Platinum Jubilee beacon. The MP joined the Jubilee celebrations on River Walk and lit the beacon at 9.45pm.

Witham’s beacon is one of more than 2,000 across the country that were lit as communities came together to celebrate the 70th year of H M The Queen’s reign, with the principal beacon being lit at Buckingham Palace. The beacon lighting on River Walk was the culmination of an evening of festivities and entertainment which included live music, fairground rides for children, vintage cars, food and refreshments. An estimated 5,000 people attended the event during the late afternoon and evening.

Commenting after her visit to the celebrations, Priti said: “Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has been our Monarch for longer than any other ruler in British history. Indeed, she is the only Monarch that I have known in my life-time and it is almost impossible to imagine our country without her.

“The Queen is a remarkable woman for whom I have tremendous admiration. Her Platinum Jubilee is truly a time for celebrating and thanking her for the long life of service she has devoted to our nation. It was an absolute pleasure to be in Witham to join in the celebrations and to light our beacon.”

While Priti was at the Jubilee celebration, she presented the prize to four year old Ada, who was the winner of Witham Town Council’s Platinum Jubilee art competition for children.
