Priti Patel, the Member of Parliament for the Witham constituency, which includes Stanway, has paid a visit to the Stanway School in Winstree Road, to chat to students about their GCSE Citizenship work and projects. Several students contacted Priti with questions on young people in poverty and homelessness which were part of a citizenship project they were working on.

On Wednesday (4th May), Priti called in to take part in a question and answer session dealing with these issues and others. It was a lively session, mediated by Ms Abigail Hamblyn, the Schools’ Head of Department for Citizenship, with many of the students putting their questions direct to the MP and the subjects were wide ranging. They included Priti’s thoughts on poverty among young people, mental health in the justice system, county lines, gang violence, the treatment of eating disorders and the harassment of women in the workplace.

Commenting after her visit, Priti said: “I always enjoy visiting Schools in my constituency and I particularly enjoyed the discussions today with the students at The Stanway School. They were intelligent and thought provoking in their questions and it was a pleasure to get into meaningful discussion with them about these important issues.”

Ms Hamblyn, Head of the Department for Citizenship said: “It was a pleasure to have Priti join in our class discussion and the students very much enjoyed their time with her. I am grateful that she took time out of her busy schedule to be here today.”
