The Rt Hon. Priti Patel has today (8th November) visited Soaring High Montessori Primary School in Coggeshall, after receiving letters from the students about local and international environmental issues. She gave a talk to pupils in years 5 & 6 on life at Westminster and the role of a Member of Parliament.

Although Priti is not currently a Member of Parliament, following the dissolution of Parliament on Tuesday, she kept the long-standing commitment to speak at the school and was able to provide a revealing snapshot of life at Westminster and in Government at the top level. Her talk was followed by a lively question and answer session in which the children were able to pursue the line of questioning from their letters covering the local environmental concerns over the Rivenhall incinerator and the use of plastics, alongside the role of the Government.

After her talk, Priti said: “These sessions are very important as I want young people to know that they do have a voice and they can influence decisions. Politics always needs fresh input and I hope that some of the pupils I spoke to today will feel more empowered to engage with their elected representatives both at Parliamentary and local level. Maybe some will even feel they want to seek public office themselves in the future.”

Helen Horton, who is a teacher at Soaring High Montessori Primary School and organised Priti’s visit said: “Our year 5 and 6 pupils found Priti’s talk fascinating and were thrilled to be able to ask their questions face to face. It was great that Priti found time out of her busy schedule to be with us. Politics affects us all, so it is important for young people to have a good understanding of how the Parliamentary process works.”
