Witham MP Priti Patel has welcomed the award of a £150,700 grant to The Marney Partnership, which manages the historic Layer Marney Tower. The money is part of the £92 million Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage which is managed by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This funding comes from the larger £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund set up by the Government to support cultural organisations and heritage sites affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Priti said: “This support for Layer Marney Tower is incredibly welcome at this challenging time for our country. Lower Marney Tower is one of the most iconic and historic buildings in the country and the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in England. It is a fantastic place to visit and in more normal times holds events, puts on tours and is a place of learning for schools visiting to see and hear about our Tudor history.”

“Visitor attractions and cultural sites across the country have been affected by the pandemic and I am delighted that the Government has recognised the importance of protecting and supporting our heritage by making this funding available.”
