Witham MP leads ceremonial march for the fallen

After attending the commemorations at the Cenotaph in London on Sunday (14th November), local MP Priti Patel, returned to Witham where, together with Col. Charles Thomas, Deputy Lieutenant of Essex & Chairman of Witham RBL and the Town’s Mayor, Cllr Angela Kilmartin, she led the ceremonial march to the War Memorial in Witham.

The march and subsequent ceremony by the Memorial, in which around 500 Witham residents, alongside representatives from all the armed forces and emergency services, took part, began at the roundabout at the top of The Avenue and followed Collingwood Road to Newland Street, where it turned left and ended in front to the War Memorial. A service, presided over by the Rev. Dr Jonathan Pritchard, Rector of the Witham and Villages Team Ministry, was held, during which local dignitaries including Priti, Col Thomas, Cllr Bill Rose and the Mayor laid wreaths to the fallen, on behalf of Witham and Braintree.

Priti said: “I am always honoured to take part in the ceremonies on Remembrance Sunday because it is so important for us all to remember the sacrifices that members of our armed forces locally and nationally have made for us in conflicts all over the world. They paid the ultimate price and we should never forget them.”

A wooden memorial was also planted during the week in the Speaker’s Garden at the Palace of Westminster, on behalf of those from the Witham constituency who never came home.
