Meeting Mid & South Essex Cancer Stewards

Priti recently visited Broomfield Hospital to meet with the cancer stewards to discuss their achievements and future plans for tackling cancer across Mid and South Essex.

During her visit, she met with Leigh Belcher (Lead Cancer Stewards) and a number of her colleagues who are part of the Mid & South Essex Cancer Steward team. Stewardship is an approach to health and care services that is being developed across Mid and South Essex ICS, and brings together teams of health and care staff and managers within a care group to get the best value from the resources in order to deliver patient care.

In particular, the Stewards are tasked with delivering improvements in primary, community, and secondary cancer care to enhance individual experience and outcomes for existing cancer patients. They also work alongside multiple agencies to improve early detection and diagnosis of cancer and address inequalities and lifestyle factors that detrimentally impact the cancer health of the wider Essex population.

Priti said: “It was a pleasure to meet with the cancer stewards and hear about their work achievements in this most important area, and some of the challenges they and patients face and are being addressed. We spoke about what more can be done to advance early detection and diagnosis, as well as hearing the first hand experiences of staff and what improvements they feel need to be made across all health care settings to see better quality care for patients.

My thanks to all the team for their work on this innovative project, which I hope to see replicated elsewhere in the future to help driver better outcomes for cancer diagnosis and treatment.”
