Priti calls for transport investment and free ports to turbo charge trade
Witham MP Priti Patel has called on the Government to invest in better transport links and to introduce free ports to turbo-charge international trade as the UK leaves the EU. The introduction of free ports would support and increase in trade and associated employment and would benefit Essex with the County hosting some of Britain’s biggest ports. Speaking after asking a question in the House of Commons to the Secretary of State for International Trade, Priti said:
“In Essex were are a County that stands at the heart of our country’s access to foreign markets. The major ports we have, including London Gateway, Tilbury and Harwich, bring in huge volumes of goods every day. Once we leave the EU we will be in a position to determine our own trade policy and find new ways to back ports and all the local businesses that benefit from them. Free ports are a way we can benefit from the new freedoms we will have when we leave the EU and I want to see Essex lead the way.”
“Trade can also be boosted by improving our road and rail infrastructure and I am continuing to make the case for new investment in the County’s key strategic infrastructure.”
